Death

Clarence Donald Nutt is the father of Donald D. Nutt, the Webmaster for the Nutt Family Genealogy Page.  C. D. Nutt passed into eternal rest at 4:30 Friday morning, October 11, 2002. His age was 69 years 10 months 26 days.

On Sunday, September 29, 2002, Mr. Nutt was taken by emergency ambulance to the Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital, located in Superior Township between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Here he spent his last twelve days. Mr. Nutt was able to visit with family and friends until the day before his death, when he began to drift in and out of consciousness. He entered total coma fourteen hours before his death.

Mr. Nutt suffered from Wegener's Granulomatosis and Adenocarcinoma. It is not known how long ago Don contracted the Wegener's  disease, but he was first diagnosed with it April 26, 2001, when he was taken to the emergency room with life-threatening breathing difficulties. Mr. Nutt bravely battled the Wegener's disease from that day till the day of his death  –  a time span of 1 year 5 months 15 days. 

Obituary

Clarence D. (Don) Nutt, of Milan, Mich., passed away on October 11, 2002, at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born November 15, 1932, in Port Huron, Mich., the son of Lewis H. and Hazel (Peak) Nutt.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn J. Bradford-Nutt; his former wife, Bertha L. White of Chelsea, Mich.; three sons, Donald D. (Peggy) Nutt of Adrian, Mich., Daniel D. (Peggy) Nutt of Grass Lake, Mich., and Douglas D. White of Chelsea, Mich.; one daughter, Denise D. (Patrick) McGraw of Hartford, Wis.; six grandchildren; one brother, Lewis H. Nutt Jr. of Evanston, Wyo.; three sisters, Shurley J. Wagor and Katherine E. Phillips, both of Fort Gratiot, Mich., and Mary Lou Raymond of Brownstown Township, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two sisters, and one daughter, Debra D. Nutt.
Mr. Nutt received a U.S. Army retirement after thirty years of service in the U.S. Army National Guard and fifteen years in the U.S. Army Retired Reserves. He held the rank of Sergeant First Class, grade E-7, at the time of his retirement. After his retirement from military service, he obtained employment with the Washtenaw County Sheriff Department as a Court Officer. For eighteen years he served as the Court Officer for the then Senior Circuit Judge, the Honorable William F. Ager Jr. Mr. Nutt also worked for sixteen years as a temporary substitute Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Mr. Nutt was a Past Commander of the American Legion, Post 46, in Ann Arbor, Mich., and held a life membership in several other military organizations. He was a founding member, and a life member, of the Republican Presidential Task Force. His nomination for membership in the Task Force was by former president Ronald Reagan.
Family will receive friends at the Nie Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor, at 6-8 P.M. Sunday, and 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Monday. Funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, with full military honors, at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich.
Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Disabled American Veterans, National Headquarters, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076. Envelopes are available at the Funeral Home.

Driving directions when using U.S. Hwy. 23 on the east side of Ann Arbor ...

  • Get off U.S. Hwy. 23 using Exit 37 East. This will place you on Washtenaw Avenue, heading east towards Ypsilanti.
  • The first main intersection will have a traffic light and will be Carpenter Road. Turn right.
  • Drive south on Carpenter Road only about 1,000 feet. Funeral home is on right side, across from a Bob Evans restaurant.

Tuesday, October 15, 2002  —  11:00 A.M., at the Nie Funeral Home.

The officiating clergy are Pastors Stephen Hobbins and Timothy Nutt.

Grave Side Service

Tuesday, October 15, 2002  —  2:30 P.M., at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, The cemetery is located six miles west of Battle Creek and 15 miles east of Kalamazoo on highway M-96 (Dickman Rd), one mile west of Augusta, Michigan. The cemetery is about 114 miles west of Detroit, 120 miles east of Chicago, and 61 miles south of Grand Rapids.

There will be an honor guard and bugler present at the grave side service.

Flowers may be sent from the florist of your choice, or by calling the following florist who is near the Nie Funeral Home and is arranging the majority of the flowers. This florist does deliver on Sunday.
