Privacy Considerations

Is it a good idea to share EVERYTHING in your family history research with everyone on the Internet?

We don't think so. While family data is the cornerstone of genealogy, we assert that the security of personal information for people still living is crucial. We do not want to publish any information that could defame, embarrass, harm, or threaten the privacy of anyone. Scam artists and others might use these personal details to commit fraud against living people, or could even use their personal details to impersonate them. Putting on-line the personal details of those who are still living is a bad idea.

With these thoughts in mind we have "cleaned" all of the personal data on living individuals out of our online databases. We retain personal details only in our private genealogy database files. We accomplish this by using a separate computer program called GEDClean, available at the GEDClean Home Page. This software automates the cleaning process by removing personally identifiable information from our GEDCOM files – the data source for all of our online databases. In a cleaned database only the names and family links are published for people still living.

We want to protect the privacy of living individuals, while at the same time providing useful genealogical information to other family history researchers. Cleaned online databases are the right way to share family data over the Internet.
